Size 15 DPNS+ Superbulky yarn in dad’s favorite color+ friends just learning to knit= improv beginner hat pattern. Use as you see fit.

Size: LARGE. I’d suggest decreasing yarn size to get a smaller hat.
Size 15 circulars. Bulky green wool.
CO 48 st.
k2p2 rib for four rows.
k straight for 12 rows. On 12th row, pm every 8 st.
Round 13: *k6, k2tog*, rep.
Round 14 and every even row: k.
Round 15: *psso, k5*, rep.
Round 17: *k to 2 before marker, k2tog*, rep.
Round 19: *psso, k to marker*
Rep. Rounds 15-19 until 12 st. total. Cut end, thread through st. twice, sew in ends.

That’s it!

As you can see, the sock decision went south. But something else interesting did happen.
After an exceedingly long period of inactivity, last week something in my hands screamed “KNIT!”

Since then (last Monday) I’ve made four hats. This from someone who last took an entire summer to make one hat.
What’s happened to me?

The First Singleton

…and here it is! Just a basic sock, from Joan Fernbach’s sock pattern. I love the heel on this.

I figured I’d start with something basic and move up as I went. So this is basically the pattern. I started ribbing on top as soon as the decreases ended. Also, there’s a random cable in the middle top because I got bored. :3

A Singular Decision

I love knitting socks. Being cursed with a perpetual lack of stash, I often knit a sock and frog it just for the pleasure of having knit the heel.

But here’s my problem.

I have chronic SSS. [Second Sock Syndrome, for the uninitiated.] SSS is the name for the inability to finish a pair of socks. You may love the first one, but by the time it comes to the second you’re incredibly tired of it.

I did not feel that SSS was a reason to stop knitting socks, so I decided to start the Singleton Sock Project. I never wear matches anyway, so I have resolved to try and replace every sock in my drawer with a handknitted singleton. I’m on the second sock, as of now, and loving it. You will be able to see my progress on my Ravelry page, should you be interested.

We’ll see how it turns out!

Snow Monkey Gloves!

HOORAY! I finished knitting Rogue’s Purple Monkey Dishwasher Gloves! I made them in white, and they are beautiful:

I’m kind of addicted to making single fingerless gloves, but I hardly ever actually finish a pair. I’m SOOO glad I finished these. Cabling is SOOO much fun, and the rows of ribbing came out perfectly.

As you may or may not know, I am a devoted Sacred Harp singer. Sacred Harp is a wonderful style of music dating from the colonial times, with the most powerful harmonies you will ever hear. I’m embedding a video at the bottom of the page with an example.

ANYWAY, I was looking around on the interwebs for Sacred Harp knitting patterns. To my great surprise, there were none. Now, Sacred Harp is also known as Shape Note, because it does not use typical solfege, but rather a scale that goes “fa, so, la, fa, so, la, mi, fa.” Each note has its own shape– fa is a triangle, so is shaped like a typical round note, la is a rectangle, and mi is a square turned on its side:

I love knitting patterns into things. I’ve knitted then ripped out so many knitted phrases I can’t remember them all. Seeing as there were no shape note knitting patterns out there that I could find, I decided that I would make a chart, to be used on whatever. I’m probably going to do fingerless gloves.
The shapes lent themselves so beautifully to a grid that I thought I might as well do another chart, so for those uninitiated in the ways of Shape Note singing, there’s another one with words. And an optional ‘L’ for the so, if you’re picky about that sort of thing. Personally I prefer without. ^^
